Trees in Tanzania’s southeast region are being burned down, sometimes illegally, to make way for sesame farms. Domestic policies promote rent seeking within the value chain and limit the power of farmers and have very less impact on the sesame development. The various policies focus on enhancing productivity, rather than being market oriented.

The major exporting destination of Tanzanian sesame are China, Japan, India, and Singapore. Tanzania imports negligible amounts of sesame seed, 55% of which is from the UAE, the rest being from India (27%), and Oman (18%).

According to the Center for the promotion of imports (CBI) report (Exporting sesame seeds to Europe, 2016) European imports of sesame seeds amounted to 155 thousand metric ton in 2016, at a value of EUR 216,000 thousand. Since 2012, imports suffered small fluctuations and peaked at 163 thousand metric ton in 2015.

In spite of small fluctuations, the 2012-2016 period saw an overall annual growth of around 4% in volume and value. Every major importing country in Europe reported an increase in import in this period.
